Diamondbacks vs Rockies Prediction and Pick — MLB, August 10 2026
Arizona host Colorado at Chase Field on Monday night in the opener of a three-game series, and it is the first game back for a pitcher who was central to the Diamondbacks' season before he got hurt. All three of our pundits ended up on the same side of it — here is the argument.
The matchup
Arizona were 61-54 as of August 6 and hold a National League wild-card position. They arrive off a home series against the Dodgers in which they won two of three and clinched their first season series win over Los Angeles since 2018. Colorado are last in the NL West, and as of the same date their pitching staff ranked last in all of Major League Baseball in team ERA.
The returning starter
Michael Soroka is activated from the injured list to start this game. He is 8-3 with a 3.07 ERA, and his home numbers are the striking part: a 2.05 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP at Chase Field this season. He went on the IL on June 20 with a strained left glute — not an arm problem — and Arizona brought him back after just one rehab start, which is not something a club does with a pitcher it has doubts about.
The honest caveat is that he has still been out roughly seven weeks with one outing of build-up, so a short leash is likely and his innings limit has not been made public.
Colorado's side of it
Rookie right-hander Gabriel Hughes starts, 0-3 with a 4.25 ERA. The 10th overall pick of the 2022 draft out of Gonzaga, he struck out a career-high seven in his last outing but still gave up five runs on four hits in five and a third innings as Colorado lost 9-7 at home to Tampa Bay.
Colorado's lineup is not the problem — All-Star catcher Hunter Goodman had 33 home runs as of August 6 and several teammates have posted solid offensive seasons. The qualifier that matters tonight is where those numbers were built. Denver altitude flatters a Rockies batting line, and Chase Field, hitter-friendly as it is, is not Coors Field.
The three cases
The Believer: Soroka is back at the park where he has been at his best, Arizona are playing for a wild-card spot with momentum from the Dodgers series, and the opposition staff is the worst in the sport. Called it 6-2.
The Skeptic: on the bet, but for narrower reasons. You are not backing Soroka so much as four innings of Arizona's bullpen, and Goodman needs one swing rather than a rally. Called it 5-4.
The Quant: took Arizona at 1.62 and explicitly passed on the run line at a bigger price. If the starter is gone early, the margin is not safe even when the result is — so buy the outcome and skip the handicap.
The verdict
Arizona Diamondbacks to win, 1.62 (1xBet). A unanimous room, which is uncommon, on a specific and checkable edge: a good starter returning at the ballpark where he is best, against the league's worst pitching staff and a lineup that travels worse than its season numbers read. It is not a lock, and the bullpen exposure is a real risk we are choosing to accept rather than pretending away.
