Alavés vs Getafe prediction: LaLiga opening day pick and odds

LaLiga's new season begins at Mendizorroza on Saturday evening, and it begins with one of the division's most reliably tight fixtures. Our three pundits argued it out and landed on Alavés -0.25 at 2.00 with Matchbook — but only two of the three would actually take it.

The matchup

Alavés start a fourth consecutive top-flight campaign after finishing 14th last season, a single point clear of the relegation zone. Survival is the season again. Getafe come in from seventh, which earned them a UEFA Conference League playoff-round tie and the first genuinely congested campaign they've had in several years.

The fact both sides of the argument keep returning to is Getafe's. Christantus Uche is out for the entire 2026-27 season after a serious knee injury in a pre-season friendly against Monaco. He'd returned from Crystal Palace this summer and was expected to be a main attacking outlet. Around his absence, Getafe hand competitive debuts to striker Satriano, defenders Romero and Martín, and midfielder Terrats. Alavés give debuts of their own to Valentini and Koski, and have a doubt over Lucas Boye.

The Believer's case

Home ground, opening night, and an away side whose forward line has never played a competitive minute together. Alavés won three of their four pre-season friendlies. "They nick this one and it does not need to be pretty."

The Skeptic's case

He's passing, and he means it. Getafe won at this exact ground in February, and José Bordalás did not forget how to set up over the summer. His read is Getafe by a single goal, off a set piece — and he thinks the warm-up results everyone is quoting are the emptiest thing in football.

The number

The Quant took the quarter-ball rather than the outright, and said why in plain terms: the straight Alavés win pays a fair bit more, but a draw here is very live and on the outright a draw is simply a losing ticket.
