Kairat vs Levski Sofia prediction: Champions League qualifier pick, odds and analysis

Kairat host Levski Sofia in the second leg of their Champions League third qualifying round tie, and the most useful fact about the match has nothing to do with either team's form.

The match isn't where it was supposed to be

Kairat were scheduled to play this at the Almaty Central Stadium. A Kanye West concert booked there for 14 August left no realistic turnaround time for the pitch, so the club asked UEFA to move the tie. It will now be played at the Turkestan Arena — a different city, over 1,000 km from Almaty, and a venue the squad does not play at.

That is not a trivia note. Kairat's edge in European ties has always been the combination of a punishing journey for visitors and a home crowd at altitude in Almaty. Turkestan is a much lower-lying city. Levski still face a long trip from Bulgaria, but the specific thing that makes Kairat awkward at home has largely been removed.

What each side needs

Levski won the first leg 1-0 in Sofia, Serginho scoring in the second minute of stoppage time. Away goals are abolished, so Kairat must win by two to advance inside 90 minutes; a 1-0 win takes the tie to extra time. Any draw, or a Levski win, and the Bulgarians go through to a playoff against AEK Athens.

Kairat did not register a single shot on target across the entire first leg. Jorginho, their top scorer last season with 8 goals in 19 league matches, was on the absentee list before that game and there has been no confirmation he is back.

Levski, meanwhile, are unbeaten in 16 matches in all competitions — 11 wins and 5 draws — and followed the first leg by beating Lokomotiv Plovdiv 2-0. Julio Velázquez's side keep clean sheets and are perfectly content to defend a lead.

The three cases

The Believer dismisses the venue story entirely: "Sixteen unbeaten and you want to talk to me about a car park in Turkestan." He has Levski winning 1-0 again.

The Skeptic expects Kairat to get a goal from sheer volume and for it to mean nothing: "What they won't get is two, not with their best finisher maybe not even in the squad." He calls 1-1.
