Coco Gauff vs Elena Rybakina Prediction: Canadian Open Semifinal Pick and Odds

The Canadian Open semifinal in Toronto puts Coco Gauff against Elena Rybakina on hard court at Sobeys Stadium, and our three pundits could not agree on it. Two backed Coco Gauff at 1.83 with Matchbook. The third argued the other way and is on the record doing so.

The matchup, and the one fact that shapes it

This is only the second career meeting between the two. The first was also in Toronto, in 2022, and Gauff won it in three sets over nearly three hours — four years stale, so treat it as colour rather than evidence.

What is not stale is the workload. Rybakina has played two three-set matches in three days: close to three hours against Liudmila Samsonova in the round of 16, coming back from two breaks down in the decider, then two hours and thirty-three minutes against Naomi Osaka in the quarter-final, saving four break points from 0-40 in the third set. That is roughly five and a half hours of tennis across two matches.

Gauff has played 75 minutes in the same window — a 6-3 6-1 win over Alina Korneeva — and then did not play her quarter-final at all, because Belinda Bencic withdrew shortly before it with a hip injury. Gauff walked into the semifinals. She has not dropped a set all week, and she has never been past the Toronto quarter-finals before: three previous attempts, three exits at that stage.

The Believer's case

Straightforward and loud. One player has been dragged through two deciders, the other has had her feet up since Sunday. Add a first Canadian Open final on the line and a week without conceding a set, and he has Gauff winning in straight sets.

The Skeptic's case against

He is the dissent here, and his reasoning is concrete rather than merely contrary. Two days off is rust, not preparation. More to the point, Gauff has served more double faults than any other player on tour this season — 257, some 56 clear of the next player — and she is walking into the biggest serve in the draw. She has been adjusting her action mid-tournament, which he reads as a player who knows there is a problem. And Rybakina came from a set down twice this week and won both times, which he does not think is the profile of a body that has run out. He has Rybakina in three.

The number

The Quant agreed with the Skeptic about the serve and disagreed about the rest mattering. He looked at the game handicap first and dropped it: that line needs Gauff to win by four clear games, and his read does not require her to be that dominant. The match winner only needs her to win.

He makes Coco Gauff about a 59% shot, and the price is 1.83 at Matchbook.

The verdict

Coco Gauff to win, 1.83 (Matchbook). Two of the three back it at real conviction; the Skeptic is against it by name. Rybakina is the higher-ranked player and she won her quarter-final anyway, so this is a fitness read rather than anything like a certainty — and if it loses, the reasoning above is the reasoning we stand behind.
