Popyrin vs Tirante prediction: Canadian Open third round pick and odds

The National Bank Open in Montreal throws up a genuinely awkward third-round match on Friday night: Alexei Popyrin, the 2024 champion here and currently the world No. 139, against Thiago Agustín Tirante, the Argentine who has just knocked out the No. 7 seed. Our three pundits landed unanimously on one side of it.

The matchup

On ranking alone this is straightforward. Tirante sits at No. 60, a career high of 58 behind him, and arrives having beaten Taylor Fritz 7-5 6-3. Popyrin is outside the top 100, was forced into qualifying for the first time in four years, and had lost five consecutive tour-level main-draw matches before this week.

On the evidence that actually applies to this court, it is not straightforward at all.

The Believer's case: some players just love a place

Popyrin has won 11 of his last 12 matches at the Canadian Masters, seven of those wins coming against top-20 opponents. He won the title here in 2024 and has now reached the last 32 three years running.

He has also arrived fresh. His qualifying match ended prematurely when Thanasi Kokkinakis retired with a back injury; Popyrin had lost only seven points in seven service games at the time, hitting seven aces and winning 92% behind his first serve. He then beat Raphael Collignon 6-4 6-3 on his 27th birthday, breaking three times.

The Skeptic's case: the ranking is not a typo

The counter is honest and worth stating plainly. Five straight main-draw defeats is not statistical noise, and a ranking of 139 reflects a genuinely poor 12 months. If Popyrin's record in Montreal is a coincidence rather than something about the conditions, this is a bad bet at any price.

What turned the Skeptic was the other side of the net. Tirante beat Fritz while losing exactly one point behind his first serve in the whole match — 25 of 26 — in 88 minutes, striking 19 winners. That is the best serving day of a player's career, and the market has repriced him on it.

The Quant's number: surface, not form

Tirante is a clay-court player by profile. In 2026 he is 11-4 on clay, a 73% win rate, against 7-6 on hard courts, 54%. Friday's match is on a hard court. He is legitimately improving — this is a third straight Masters 1000 third round — but the price has moved specifically on the Fritz scalp.

The game handicaps quoted for this match are all sub-three-game lines, which are set handicaps in disguise and grade wrong for a market settled on total games, so they are no use here. The games total sits at 23 with both sides priced close to even. That leaves the outright.

"I make Popyrin about a 62% shot and Caesars are paying 1.80."

The verdict

Alexei Popyrin to win, 1.80 (Caesars). All three pundits on the same side, with the Skeptic backing it grudgingly and naming the risk on the record.
