Portsmouth vs QPR prediction: Championship opening day pick, odds and team news

The 2026-27 Championship season opens at Fratton Park, and it opens with a market that has Portsmouth as favourites while their treatment room fills up. Our three pundits split on it and landed on Queens Park Rangers draw-no-bet at 2.21 with Pinnacle.

Portsmouth's availability problem

John Mousinho's side go into the opener with roughly ten senior players unavailable and several more doubtful.

• Marko Milovanovic, the club's marquee summer signing, is weeks away from match fitness and will not feature.
• Thomas Waddingham limped off shortly after coming on against West Ham in the Carabao Cup on 8 August and faces a reported six to ten weeks out pending a scan.
• Franco Umeh tore a hamstring in a pre-season friendly against Kuwait and is out for a prolonged period.
• Keshi Anderson is out with a quad injury.
• Also named unavailable: Josh Murphy, Harvey Blair, Mark Kosznovszky, Jacob Farrell, Tayo Singerr and Connor Ogilvie.

Marlon Pack's status is contested between sources — one lists him injured, another says he is ahead of schedule after knee surgery.

QPR's is much shorter

Julien Stéphan is without Karamoko Dembélé (long-term knee) and Tariq Lamptey (out until the September international break). Rumarn Burrell, Paul Smyth and Jonathan Varane all took knocks against Millwall, but Stéphan has said he is confident all three are available. Dennis Cirkin has signed from Sunderland.

What is not an angle

Both clubs played in the Carabao Cup first round on 8 August — West Ham beat Portsmouth 3-1, and QPR drew 1-1 with Millwall before losing on penalties. The EFL Cup first round goes straight to penalties with no extra time, so neither side played beyond ninety minutes and both have had seven days. There is no rest advantage in either direction, and anyone claiming one is wrong on the format.

What the room said

The Skeptic opened with the asymmetry itself: ten senior players out, and the market still has that side shorter.

The Believer is the dissenter and said so. He would have backed Portsmouth to win outright, arguing that counting names off a list ignores who actually starts, that several of the ten are squad players, and that Fratton Park on opening day is worth a goal in itself.

The Quant gave him half of it — a headline count of ten flatters, and he adjusted for it — but landed on QPR anyway. On the rung he chose the draw-no-bet over the quarter-ball beside it, because both die in exactly the same place, so shortening buys no protection and only costs money.
