Union Saint-Gilloise v Bodø/Glimt prediction — Champions League qualifying pick and odds
Union Saint-Gilloise host Bodø/Glimt on Tuesday in the first leg of a Champions League third qualifying round tie, and the decisive piece of information about it has appeared almost exclusively in Dutch-language Belgian reporting.
Two premises to correct first
Union are frequently described as the reigning Belgian champions. They are not — Club Brugge won 2025-26 by four points; Union finished runners-up and won the Croky Cup. And they are not a side several games into its campaign: Union have played one competitive match all season, the Belgian Super Cup on 31 July, a 1-1 draw with Brugge won 5-4 on penalties. The Jupiler Pro League begins this weekend, with Union at Westerlo on 8 August.
The squad list
Union registered 21 of a possible 25 players for this tie, because the homegrown quota could not be filled. Six notable names are therefore ineligible: goalkeeper Herve Koffi, signed to be the new number one, whose paperwork was not completed in time; Ondrej Kricfalusi, a €5m midfield signing; Nohim Chibani; Ilan Hurtevent; and first-team regulars Fedde Leysen and Anouar Ait El Hadj. David Hubert said 31 players deserved a place and 21 were available.
Compounding it, Union sold Kjell Scherpen to Ipswich for €10m, so the goal belongs to Vic Chambaere — who saved a penalty in the Super Cup shootout, which is a different thing from being an established European goalkeeper — with the man bought to replace Scherpen unregistered. Christian Burgess left for Gent on a free. The summer window did not gut Union's spine; it removed their cover. There is no depth behind this eleven in Europe.
A home leg in name only
Stade Joseph Marien is not UEFA-approved, so Union host at the Diaz Arena in Ostend — roughly 8,432 capacity, natural grass, about 115 km from Brussels, with the club chartering buses and a train for supporters.
Bodø/Glimt's side of it
Bodø are sixteen rounds into the Eliteserien and top of it on 38 points from 16, one point clear of Viking. Five consecutive wins, five consecutive clean sheets. They beat Lillestrøm 4-0 at Aspmyra on 31 July with a full-strength side and showed no sign of rotating for a European week. Their one confirmed absentee is Hakon Evjen (knee, injured 26 July), expected to miss both legs. Kjetil Knutsen remains in charge, contracted to 2029. Last season this team reached the Europa League semi-final, knocked out Inter, and won away at Manchester City and Atlético Madrid.
Union's own captain, Kevin Mac Allister, put the asymmetry on the record to Sporza: "Zij hebben ritme, maar wij zijn frisser" — they have rhythm, we're fresher.
What we checked and discarded
The fatigue narrative does not survive the fixture list. Both sides played on Friday 31 July, so both arrive on four days' rest, and both play a domestic league match on Saturday 8 August before the second leg. It is symmetric — there is no sandwich for either team. We also discarded a claim circulating on tipster pages that Sondre Brunstad Fet is out for three weeks with a knee injury: he scored in the 25th minute on 31 July. His knee problem was in May.
The number and the rung
The Quant has this close to even money once the draw is removed, with 1xBet paying 2.19 on Bodø/Glimt with the stake returned if the match finishes level. He prefers that to the quarter-goal handicap on the board, which makes you pay for a draw the draw-no-bet ticket refunds outright.
The verdict
All three pundits back Bodø/Glimt draw no bet @ 2.19, room conviction 3.7 out of 5. The honest limits: first legs in this round are cagey, Bodø are without Evjen, and this particular rung sits at a single book. The narrative most people will price — reigning Belgian champions at home to a Norwegian club — is wrong on the first clause and misleading on the second.
