Gibson's my kind of player — a kid having the season of her life, five top-twenty scalps this year, and she's already beaten Alexandrova once, at Indian Wells, on this exact surface. That wasn't a fluke, that was a statement. And the other side of the net? Alexandrova quit mid-decider in Memphis last week. You don't just shake that off.
The Skeptic1:47 PM
Easy with the retirement story. She's won here since. Whatever bit her in Memphis didn't stop her reaching round three. That's the trap — everyone reads 'retired last week' and misses that she's playing fine this week. But that price is wrong. Top-fifteen player, live question mark, priced this short? Against the one kid who already beat her this year? No. I'll hold my nose.
The Quant1:49 PM
Two facts and they both point the same way. Gibson beat this exact opponent on a hard court this year, and Alexandrova pulled out mid-match in her last tournament with something the press never got an answer on. When she's right she's clearly the better player — but the board is pricing her like Memphis never happened, and that's the specific thing that's wrong with this line.
Giving Gibson a head start pays too little to bother with, and my case is that she wins the whole thing, not that she keeps it close. I make it roughly a coin flip and Betfair pays 2.16 on her side of it. That's the bet, and I'd bet it properly.
