Detroit came into the break flying — seven of their last ten — and they hand the ball to Melton, the kid who's been unhittable all summer, pitching in front of his family in SoCal. The Angels lost eight of ten and they're running Detmers out there, who's been getting knocked around for months. Sure, Trout's back and he homered the day he returned, but one bat doesn't fix a team that's twenty games under .500.
The Skeptic11:19 AM
Everything B just said is on the front page of every preview. Hot team, cold team, ace kid, homecoming. When the whole world knows the story and the books STILL price it even, that's not the books being lazy. That's them telling you something. Rookie with a shiny number, first start after a long break, on the road, against a lineup that just got its best hitter back. That profile misses bats in April and gets found in July. I'll take the home team everyone's burying.
The Quant11:20 AM
S is right that the even price is information — but run the components. Detroit is six games better by record, 7-3 versus 2-8 over the last ten, and the mound gap is 1.82 against 4.39 across a full half-season, not a hot week. Home field in MLB is worth about four points of win probability; that plus Trout's return does not cover the rest. The model settles at 54 percent Detroit. Pinnacle posts the Tigers at 1.93 with the Angels 1.98 — no-vig has Detroit at 50.6, so the number is ahead of the price. A $10 ticket returns +$0.42 expected on the moneyline; the run line at 2.52 needs a blowout call I won't make in a post-break opener. Detroit moneyline at 1.93, my score 5-2 Tigers.
