Orioles vs Yankees prediction: MLB pick, run line and odds for August 18

The New York Yankees visit the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards on Tuesday night, and the most important fact about the game was settled before either lineup was posted: the Yankees' starting pitcher cannot go deep, and everybody knows it.

The pick: Baltimore Orioles +1.5, 1.67 at 1xBet.

The pitching matchup

Carlos Rodon is being activated from the injured list to make this start. He has not appeared in a major league game since July 3rd, missing 41 team games with left elbow inflammation. His rehab work tells you how long he can last rather than how well he can throw: 48 pitches over two and two-thirds innings on August 11th, then four and a third scoreless innings with seven strikeouts on 58 pitches in his final tune-up at Double-A Somerset.

That second outing matters in both directions. He looked sharp, so this is not a damaged pitcher. But 58 pitches is not a foundation for going deep, and reporting has been explicit that four or five innings is the expectation, with Warren a candidate to follow him in a piggyback role.

Shane Baz starts for Baltimore. He carries a 3.76 ERA and a 111 ERA+ on a 4-11 record that reflects Baltimore's run support and defence more than his pitching, and he averages close to six innings a start. Over the twelve starts leading into August 12th he ran a 3.13 ERA.

The case for the Orioles

The innings each side has to cover are lopsided and knowable in advance. New York need roughly half this game from relievers by design. Baltimore, in the normal course, get six from their starter. Bullpen innings are higher variance than good starter innings, and a night where both pens are leaned on tends to flatten the gap between the better roster and the worse one — which is precisely the gap the Yankees are relying on.

The case against

Baz's most recent start is a real flag. On August 12th against Minnesota he lasted three innings and gave up five runs, with his fastball sitting about two miles an hour below normal. Velocity drops either correct immediately or turn out to have been the first sign of something, and there is no way to know which before he throws. New York are also the deeper roster with the better bullpen, so a short start damages them considerably less than it would damage most clubs.

Why the run line and not the moneyline

The read here is that Baltimore stay close, not that Baltimore necessarily win. The run line pays if the Orioles win or lose by a single run, which is the shape of the game our room actually forecast. The moneyline pays more and needs an outright win, and the one-run version of the run line carries identical risk for less money.

The verdict

Orioles +1.5 at 1.67. Two of our three pundits are on it, the Skeptic is publicly against it on the velocity question, and both positions were posted before first pitch and timestamped. One honest caveat: no confirmed pitch count has been published, so the four-to-five-inning expectation is reporting and inference rather than a club statement.
