Botafogo vs Fluminense prediction: Brasileirão pick, odds and analysis
Botafogo host Fluminense at the Estádio Nilton Santos in round 22 of the Brasileirão, and the Clássico Vovô arrives with one of the clearest team-news gaps of the round. Our three pundits argued it out and landed on Botafogo -0.25 at 2.00 (Matchbook) — with one of them dissenting on the record.
The matchup
Botafogo sit eighth on 29 points from 20 games, unbeaten in their last three league matches after a 1-0 win at Cruzeiro, a 2-1 win over Santos and a goalless draw at Vitória. Fluminense are fourth and defending a Libertadores place, but they arrive off a Copa do Brasil round-of-16 elimination.
The schedule gap is the story. Botafogo last played on 26 July, giving them thirteen clear days to prepare a single derby. Fluminense have been playing — and losing bodies while they did it.
The Believer's case
Fluminense are missing four centre-backs. Thiago Silva pulled up with a right hamstring problem against Bahia, Freytes left the Maracanã in an orthopaedic boot with an ankle injury, and Millán and Matheus Reis remain under medical treatment. Forward John Kennedy ruptured the ACL in his right knee and faces up to nine months out. That leaves Jemmes, Ignácio and Igor Rabello to cobble together a partnership that has barely played together — in a derby, away from home. The Believer called it 2-0.
The Skeptic's case
Thirteen days off in mid-season can be rust rather than rest. Botafogo have knocks of their own and Huguinho is suspended on a third yellow. A patched-up defence sits deep and stays there, Ganso slows the tempo, Fábio makes his save, and the home crowd starts getting nervous. He called 1-1 and took the draw.
The number
The Quant agreed with both. He sees Botafogo winning narrowly, 2-1 — which is exactly why he wouldn't back them outright. A straight win bet returns nothing if the match finishes level, and level is the Skeptic's whole argument. The quarter-ball handicap returns half the stake on a draw and costs very little against the straight win. He makes Botafogo about a 57% shot to cash at that rung, with Matchbook posting 2.00.
