Hurkacz v Giron prediction — Canadian Open first round pick and odds
The 2026 National Bank Open men's draw opens in Montreal with a first-round tie the market has, in our view, priced off a name rather than a body. Hubert Hurkacz is the favourite against Marcos Giron. We are taking Giron at 2.60.
The matchup
This match was rained off on 3 August before a ball was struck and rescheduled into Tuesday's programme, first on Rogers Court at 11:00 local. The draw is 96 players with 32 seeds byed into round two, so both these men start here.
The central fact is Hurkacz's calendar. His last completed match was the Wimbledon fourth round on 5 July against Jan-Lennard Struff, and it ended with him retiring in the fifth set at 4-2 down, one set from a Grand Slam quarter-final. No tournament appears anywhere between that afternoon and Montreal. He is entered on a protected ranking, following arthroscopic right knee surgery in July 2025 — "It has been two surgeries and a lot of work," as he put it himself. On 15 June he dropped out of the top 100 for the first time since 2018.
Giron, by contrast, is ranked 86 and has competitive sets in his legs: he was the third qualifying seed and beat Pablo Llamas Ruiz 2-6 6-3 6-1 on 1 August, then had two full rest days when the rain wiped out the schedule. Depending on which ranking snapshot you read, these two are peers — and on some readings Giron is the higher-ranked man.
The Believer's case
One of these players is match-fit and the other is a question mark. Giron won a three-setter from a set down four days ago and has practised since. An 11am start at humidex 33 punishes the man who has not played.
The Skeptic's case
He takes the other side of his own bet first: nobody has reported on Hurkacz's physical state since 5 July. No withdrawal, no fitness bulletin. Thirty days off reads as recovery just as easily as rust, and the head-to-head is 4-0 Hurkacz. At six foot five with a big serve, this surface suits him. What the Skeptic will not do is pay odds-on for a man on a protected ranking playing his first match in a month in that heat.
The number
The Quant gives Giron about a 45% shot and Betfair are paying 2.60. He is explicit about the weakness: this is read off the gap in the calendar, not off a doctor's note. He would rather have bought a few games' head start, but the only handicaps offered on this match are set lines dressed up as game lines, and we settle tennis handicaps on games — so the match winner is the honest way to hold it.
The verdict
All three pundits back Marcos Giron @ 2.60, at a room conviction of 3.7 out of 5. The Believer sees it in two sets, the Skeptic in three. This is not a lock and we are not selling it as one — the decisive fact is something nobody has reported either way. It is a judgement that a 30-day gap beginning with an injury retirement deserves more discount than the board has given it.
