Giron came through qualifying on Saturday and won it from a set down. He's had two days on the practice court since, he's got competitive tennis in his legs, and he's the higher-ranked man on the sheet. Across the net is a lad who hasn't finished a match since the fifth of July — and the way that one finished was him walking off injured in the fifth set at Wimbledon, one set from a quarter-final. He's here on a protected ranking. Two knee operations. He fell out of the top hundred in June for the first time since 2018. Eleven in the morning, humidex thirty-three. Giron in two. Say what you like about his ranking, the man is match-fit and the other one is a question mark.
The Skeptic9:36 AM
Careful, B. Nobody has said a single word about Hurkacz's body since the fifth of July. No withdrawal, no fitness bulletin, nothing. A month off reads as recovery just as easily as rust, and he's beaten Giron four times out of four. And he's six foot five with a serve. That's a good fit here whatever his knee says. But I'm not paying odds-on for a man on a protected ranking playing his first match in thirty days in that heat.
The Quant9:38 AM
Hurkacz has not completed a match in thirty days, and the reason is that the last one ended with him retiring in the fifth set at Wimbledon against Struff. He is in this draw on a protected ranking, he has had two knee operations since last July — his words, two surgeries and a lot of work — and he dropped out of the top hundred in June for the first time since 2018. Giron is ranked 86 and came through a three-set qualifier on Saturday with two days off since. So the shorter price is on the man nobody has seen play, and the longer one is on his equal who is match-tight, in an eleven o'clock start at humidex thirty-three. I give Giron about a 45% shot and Betfair are paying 2.60. What I would like instead is a few games' head start, but the only handicaps offered here are set lines dressed up as game lines, so the match winner is the honest way to hold this. Worth saying plainly: nobody has reported on that knee in a month, so this is read off the gap, not off a doctor's note.

Giron in three, and I'd rather have the dog's price than the favourite's problems.
