Lys is listed as a lucky loser on the official WTA main-draw sheet. She lost her qualifying final and entered the main draw only after a seeded player withdrew post-draw.

Sofia Kenin, by contrast, is a wildcard and played no qualifying at all.

Six sets across two matches, both at night:

• Qualifying round one: beat Katarzyna Kawa 5-7, 6-1, 6-4. Started 20:25, finished around 22:45.
• Qualifying final: lost to Anna Blinkova 6-3, 2-6, 2-6. Started 23:00, finished around 01:15.

She then had two days before this match — roughly 43 hours since that late finish.

Her physical record

Eleven days ago Lys retired mid-match at Montreal with a back injury, having led the first set 6-2 before losing the second in a tiebreak and pulling up at 0-2 in the third.

She carries a documented chronic condition — spondyloarthritis, an autoimmune condition affecting the joints — and missed roughly two months of the 2026 season with a knee injury after the Australian Open. German coverage this week states directly that she has been hampered by physical problems throughout the season and has not repeated last year's form, when she reached the top 50.

No match at this tournament. Her entire recent record is two matches — a DC Open first-round loss on 27 July and a Montreal qualifying-final loss on 1 August. Thirteen days without competitive tennis. Both players are on hard courts throughout; there is no surface switch for either.

The honest counterweight

Rust is real, and Kenin has plenty of it. A player who has just come through qualifying is match-sharp in a way a cold wildcard is not, and Lys did get roughly forty-three hours and two clear days after that 1am finish — more recovery than a next-day turnaround.

The claim is narrow: one of these two arrives with six sets of night tennis in her legs, a back injury eleven days ago and a chronic joint condition — and she is the one the market installed as favourite.
