Newcastle vs Liverpool prediction: our pick, the price, and the argument behind it

Newcastle United host Liverpool at St James' Park on the opening weekend, and it is a stranger fixture than the two badges suggest. Both clubs changed manager this summer — Matthias Jaissle replacing Eddie Howe, Andoni Iraola replacing Arne Slot — so neither side has a competitive match under its new coach.

The matchup context

Newcastle have sold three first-choice starters in a single window: captain Bruno Guimarães to Arsenal, Sandro Tonali to Tottenham, and Anthony Gordon to Barcelona. The money coming back has largely bought goalkeepers and full-backs. Joelinton is out with a muscle problem until roughly mid-September, and Tino Livramento missed the entire pre-season after withdrawing from England's World Cup squad.

Most importantly, Jaissle has said on the record that he needs to be "smart with the load management" around Dan Burn and Lewis Miley. Burn is the club captain and played 45 minutes in total across pre-season, having gone deep at the World Cup. The two players who would ordinarily patch that midfield may both begin on the bench.

Liverpool's absences are real but differently placed. Joe Gomez, Conor Bradley, Giovanni Leoni and Hugo Ekitike are all out — but those are cover, not the first eleven. Virgil van Dijk, Alisson, Alexander Isak, Cody Gakpo, Florian Wirtz and Ryan Gravenberch are all fit and available. Alexis Mac Allister and Victor Munoz contested the World Cup final and may not start.

The Believer wants the Newcastle goal — the old ground, the noise, Isak returning to face his former crowd — but does not believe the midfield lasts ninety minutes.
