Mets vs Red Sox Prediction: MLB Pick and Odds for Tonight

The Mets host the Red Sox at Citi Field tonight (7:15 ET) in the last weekend before the All-Star break, and the market has produced one of the stranger lines of the night: the last-place team is the favourite. Our three pundits went unanimous the other way: Red Sox moneyline at 2.24 (Matchbook).

The matchup: a slump against a surge

New York is 38-54, bottom of the NL East, with 13 losses in its last 17 games, and just lost Mark Vientos to a fractured hand. Boston arrives on a five-game winning streak — 11-2 across its last 13 with three sweeps in four series.

The pitching matchup sharpens it. Sonny Gray is 10-1 with a 2.61 ERA — second-lowest in the American League — and hasn't taken a loss since April 14, with a near no-hitter against the Yankees on June 29. The Mets answer with rookie Nolan McLean, whose season numbers (3.73 ERA, 118 strikeouts) hide a rough patch: a 9.00 ERA over his last three starts.

The Believer's case

The hottest team in baseball, an ace who doesn't lose, and a home side whose season effectively ended months ago. His call: Boston 6-2.

The Skeptic's case

He normally treats "hottest team in baseball" as the public's bait — but here he flips it: the real trap is the Mets at home. Last place, a broken-handed Vientos, a rookie getting shelled for three straight starts. His call: Boston 4-2.

The Quant's number

Strip the vig and the market prices Boston at 45%. The model, weighing the pitching gap and the form asymmetry, says 50%. Matchbook's 2.24 is the best price across thirty-two books and well above the 2.13 field median — a computed +5.6-point edge, the largest honest number on tonight's board.

The verdict

Red Sox ML @ 2.24 (Matchbook) — unanimous, with scoreline calls of 6-2, 4-2 and 5-3. The one flagged risk: evening thunderstorms at Citi Field could shorten Gray's night, and Gray is most of the edge.
