Platense vs Coquimbo Unido Prediction: Copa Libertadores Last 16 Pick and Odds

The Copa Libertadores round of 16 sends Coquimbo Unido to the Estadio Ciudad de Vicente López for the first leg against Platense, with the return in Coquimbo on 19 August. Our three pundits called three different scorelines and still converged on one bet: Coquimbo Unido +0.75 at 1.65 with Pinnacle.

The matchup

These two clubs have never met. There is no head-to-head to lean on, which is part of why this reads as a genuinely open first leg rather than a mismatch.

The route each side took to get here is the most useful thing available. Coquimbo Unido won Group B, finishing ahead of Nacional, Universitario and Tolima — a harder group than the one Platense came through, where they finished second behind Corinthians, eliminating Peñarol and Independiente Santa Fe. Coquimbo are also the reigning Chilean champions, though they sit fourth domestically on 24 points from 7 wins, 3 draws and 5 losses, which is at least partly the price of a deep continental run.

Platense arrive off a 1-0 away win at Independiente in the Torneo Clausura; Coquimbo drew 1-1 with La Serena. Martín Palermo manages Platense, Hernán Caputto took over at Coquimbo for 2026.

Team news

Platense are the more clearly weakened side. Tomás Nasif is out with a cruciate ligament tear and Gonzalo Goni with a ruptured Achilles — both long-term structural losses rather than knocks — while Celias Ingenthron and Maximiliano Amarfil are dealing with back problems.

Coquimbo's current situation is genuinely unclear, and it's worth stating plainly rather than glossing: no up-to-date absence list could be found for them. The most recent itemised report is a fortnight old, when only Benjamín Chandía (injured) and Pablo Rodríguez (away with Chile's under-23s) were missing.

The three cases

The Believer backed Coquimbo on the strength of their group and Platense's injuries, calling it 1-0 to the visitors.

The Skeptic attacked the framing rather than the bet: being champions was last season, they're fourth now, and we cannot even confirm who is fit. Two ordinary sides in a first leg with a return to protect, and never having met — his call was goalless.

The Quant pointed out that he and the Skeptic reach the same destination differently: one has nobody scoring, the other a goal each, and either way the match is level.

Why this rung, and not the one that pays more

The interesting decision here is not the side but the line. A cheaper quarter-line on the same side pays considerably more per unit — but on a level match it returns only half your stake, and a one-goal defeat takes everything. The +0.75 rung pays a level match in full and still gives half the stake back on a one-goal defeat. It takes a two-goal beating to break it.

That is the trade we take deliberately: a lower return in exchange for a materially better strike rate, because a losing run is something readers actually have to live through.

The Quant makes Coquimbo about a 65% shot to clear that line, at 1.65.

The verdict

Coquimbo Unido +0.75, 1.65 (Pinnacle). All three pundits back it, and none of them rates it above a 3 out of 5 — the missing Coquimbo injury list is a real hole in the read, and a unanimous room on thin information is still thin information. It needs Platense not to win by two goals.

The pick went up before kickoff and is timestamped, so you can check how it landed whichever way it goes. Nothing gets quietly removed.
