Phoenix Mercury vs New York Liberty prediction: the line prices a team that isn't playing

The Phoenix Mercury host the New York Liberty on Saturday 1 August, tip-off 21:00 CEST — noon local time in Phoenix. New York are 16-13 and eighth in the standings; Phoenix are 11-18, tenth overall and fifth in the West. The market makes the Liberty 1.70 and lays 2.5 points.

The line is correct, and that is the problem

Start with the ratings. New York's offensive rating is 111.4 against a defensive rating of 108.8 — net +2.6, at a pace of 79.83. Phoenix are 104.6 and 108.9 — net −4.3, at 79.22. That is a gap of about 6.9 per hundred possessions, roughly five and a half points across a full game. Knock off around three for Phoenix's home floor and you land on New York by two and a half.

The posted line is New York −2.5. The market has priced a healthy, rested Liberty perfectly, and given nothing back for the fact that neither adjective applies today.

Two rotation players out, one of them a star

Satou Sabally was listed OUT on 31 July and is in concussion protocol, having been elbowed in the face by the Las Vegas Aces' NaLyssa Smith. It is her second concussion in eight months, and head coach DeMarco has given no return timeline.

Leonie Fiebich was listed OUT on 30 July with a left foot issue. She was seen in individual drills on Thursday but has no timetable.

Phoenix have nobody out. The only absent name on their roster is Jovana Nogic, who left in June to play in Russia for the season — a roster fact, not a late scratch.

The schedule spot

This is the third game of a three-game western road trip in five days for New York: 28 July at the Sparks, a 113-109 win; 30 July at Las Vegas, a 104-99 loss; and now Phoenix. Both of those were high-possession grinders.

Phoenix last played on Wednesday 29 July, at home, beating Golden State 91-89. Two full days of rest, no travel, and a three-game winning streak behind them.

What about the total?

We looked and left it alone. The ratings estimate lands around 171 against a posted 176.5, and the two 2026 head-to-heads finished on 158 and 143. But New York are 9-1 to the over in their last 10, and losing Fiebich — a primary perimeter defender — argues for more points, not fewer. That contradiction is why it isn't a bet.

The verdict

Phoenix Mercury +2.5 at 1.97 (LowVig.ag). All three pundits on it at conviction 4 out of 5.

The honest risk in this Phoenix Mercury vs New York Liberty prediction: Breanna Stewart averages 21.5 points a game and Jonquel Jones 9.0 rebounds, and either can decide a game regardless of who else is missing. New York also won both 2026 meetings — though both were in New York.

Every pick goes up before tip-off, timestamped and permanent. You can check the record.
